Has an Indian Test captain been under tremendous pressure before? Yes. (Full BGT Coverage | More Cricket News)

However, has an Indian Test captain ever been benched for poor performances? Not just yet.

India are in do-or-die territory in Sydney, in the decisive fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, that gets underway on Friday, January 3.

To add to all the sparks, head coach Gautam Gambhir did not confirm whether under-fire skipper Rohit Sharma would be a part of India’s playing XI for the Sydney Test.

Many have been extremely critical of Rohit Sharma, and understandably so.

Watching a world-class opener fall apart so dramatically is startling, especially with so much on the line.

The 37-year-old Rohit has scored just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20. He started off batting at six in the pink-ball Test, and then went back to the top of the order, replacing an in-form KL Rahul.

However, the runs never seemed to come his way in a sport where they are like currencies.

Rohit was present at India’s optional training session on the eve of the New Year’s Test.

However, when asked about his participation, head coach Gambhir was a little vague with his response.

Hockey India on Wednesday (August 28) named an 18-member squad led by ace drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh for the tournament, with Krishan Bahadur Pathak expectedly being promoted to main goalkeeper duties following PR Sreejesh's international retirement.

Sreejesh announced his retirement after India won a second successive Olympic bronze medal in Paris earlier this month.

"We will decide on the playing XI after looking at the pitch," Gambhir was quoted as saying by the PTI.

When Gambhir was asked whether he had had conversations with Rohit and Kohli regarding their form that continues to hurt the side, Gambhir quickly brushed it aside and said there were just discussions about how to win matches.

"There's only one conversation and that's how to win matches for India. We all know how important that is," Gambhir added.

The 43-year-old did not take any names but acknowledged the fact that an Indian transition is in the pipeline and performance will be the only criteria to cement a spot in the team.

"Indian cricket will always be in safe hands as long as there are honest people in that dressing room. Honesty is the most important thing for any transition. And it's not phasing out senior players and bringing in new players. Ultimately what will keep you in the dressing room is performance,” he added.

Adding to India's misery, pacer Akash Deep has been ruled out of the fifth Test with a stiff backcgebet, with Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana expected to replace the seamer.
