The Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras high courts decision to transfer the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy case to CBI.

More than 60 people had lost their lives and 200 others were hospitalised in a case of alcohol poisoning in June this year.

The incident, caused by the consumption of adulterated liquor, stunned Kallakurichi and nearby districts of Madhavacheri and Seshasamudram.

A bench comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan ruled against interfering with the High Court's order.

The Madras High Court observed, "In view of the foregoing discussion, with specific reference to the authoritative pronouncements of the Supreme Court in the matter of transfer of cases to the CBI, this court is of the prima facie view that this Kallakurichi hooch tragedy case is one of the rarest of rare cases which warrants a fair and impartial investigation by the CBI".

Right after their touchdown, family members greeted the players with garlands and warm hugs, before accepting congratulations from the state political leaders such as minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla.

"There won't be a vacuum. Someone will come in my place, for sure. All the sports are like that. Sachin Tendulkar was there and now there is Virat Kohli, and someone will take his place tomorrow. So, Sreejesh was there yesterday, but someone else will come and take his place tomorrow," the goalkeeping stalwart told PTI in an interview at the India House in Paris.

The court had also directed the state police to hand over all case diaries to the CBI within two weeks and instructed Tamil Nadu authorities to cooperate fully.

As reported by India Today, following public outrage the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government, requesting a detailed report on the tragedy. In an official release, “The Commission observes states have exclusive power to regulate the production, manufacture, possession, transport, purchase, and sale of intoxicating liquors,” read from the statement.

By November 2024, the Madras High Court stepped in and ordered the transfer of the investigation from Tamil Nadu Police’s Crime Branch-CID to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the need for a fair and impartial probe.

"Having heard the advocate general appearing for the petitioners and having gone through the materials on record, we see no good reason to interfere with the very well-reasoned judgment of the High Court. The Special Leave Petitions are, accordingly, dismissed," the bench observed.

The High Court further noted that had the police taken preventive action, the mass  loss of lives in Kallakurichi could have been “easily averted.” The CBI has now been tasked with probing all aspects of the tragedy and filing final reports at the earliest.
